it takes a village…

all living together in a Victorian townhouse in Toronto

this past weekend many travel bloggers gathered up in the grand city of Toronto, Ontario, for the travel conference known as TBEX. this is was my third time to attend TBEX and while every time the conference gets better and better, this is not why this past weekend will go down in history as one of my favorites.

let’s just start with what do you do when 1,200 people come to town? where do they all sleep? thank goodness Toronto is the 4th largest city in North America! so it seemed there was room for everyone attending TBEX plus those who were merely in Toronto for business or pleasure. i had the good fortune of finding a fantastic townhouse with FlipKey for some of my blogging buddies (most i’ve met & traveled with plus one superstar i knew would fit right in) because sometimes staying together is more cost-effective. BUT let’s be honest, staying together is WAY more fun and you actually get far more quality time and in our case, time to learn from each other as well as play together.

some might be frightened by this scenario. what if the people don’t get along? what if one person is really messy or loud? what if some don’t chip in and help out? yes, there can be a lot of what if’s in this type of situation. first of all, i think it’s important to go into a plan like this knowing that those things could happen and being ok with it. i wasn’t terribly concerned because the other advice i’d give is to know who you are including. don’t leave too many possibilities for loose cannons. all i can tell you is this group was like a utopian state of heaven. as we started to discuss arrivals and departures to the house…things like who will let us in, what do we need to bring, it became crystal clear this was a group of “i’ll do this and you pick up where i left off”. everyone was helping one another and i found this incredibly endearing. it’s one of the things that makes me love these friends even more.

from Stay Adventurous meeting me at the house & doing the initial liquor run. (no one likes to arrive without a possible cocktail in hand) to Travel Destination Bucket List bringing her extra wine glasses to Traveling Ted driving people places & doing the replenishing booze run. then there’s The World Wanderer, Captain and Clark, GQTrippin and one of the two gorgeous Lazy Travelers who all took part in building our “confessional”. we all have a love/hate relationship with Captain for his bartending skills. then i have my lovely Crazy Sexy Fun Traveler who always looks out for me and is the best listener and friend a person could ever ask for. she’ll stay up with you and talk for hours. all the #RWTBEX peeps got a bit of her goodness. and Small Crazy, a kindred spirit to Lola with her love of PINK, props and toys. thank you for being the incredible you that you are! i know we all appreciate those who did the occasional pick up sweep of the place and especially Captain and Clark for doing the check out for us all. i’m telling you, it truly takes a village & this is one that i’d gladly be a part of again and again.

my friends were so appreciative that we had a place to stay together but, truly, i was the lucky one to have so many people i love all together. nothing pleases me more than doing something that makes so many happy. AND selfishly, i got to spend a lot of time with those people who make ME very happy. so thank you #RWTBEX crew for agreeing to stay in our lovely townhouse on Bleecker.

FK

our FlipKey townhouse was nestled in the heart of historic Toronto in the Cabbagetown neighborhood. Cabbagetown comprises the largest continuous area of preserved Victorian housing in North America. this circa 1874 home was in a great location for all our downtown activities. i found the townhouse quite spacious with a perfect blend of original charm and modern touches a traveler would need.

TBEX – Girona, Spain

the good, the bad and the ugly

ooo lala – kick off party at the castle

here we are. another Travel Bloggers Exchange aka TBEX has come and gone and all the “lessons learned and friends made” posts are coming out. i can say i did learn a thing or two and made a few new friends. yeah, it was THE BOMB.

BUT that’s not what you wanna hear now is it? you want the juice, the scoop, the dirt, the scuttlebutt. well, you came to the right blog. ‘where in the world is lola?’ has the gossip AND it’s completely ridiculous how many bloggers got accosted by this one crazy blogger. YEP, i’m talking about ME!

if you recall, last TBEX conference i claimed to have stage fright. well you no longer have to wonder how i made out! (AND NOT LITERALLY perverts) i’d say this TBEX lola jumped right past that stage fright, much to some fellow travel bloggers dismay. here’s the breakdown:

GOOD

cava was overflowing at the castle

learning, networking, partying. it was all that and more compared to my last TBEX in Colorado. i truly enjoyed the sessions and got more out of this TBEX that i will now apply to marketing my brand & making my blog better. i also enjoyed the networking. many, many of my favorite European bloggers were in attendance and i was beyond *thrilled* to finally actually meet them. NOW let’s discuss the parties. yeah, those were GRRREAT. lola managed to suck down plenty o cava at the castle, convince the bar to let buy my own G&Ts at the beach soiree and drink everything under the sun on Saturday night between the Cathedral beer to The River sangria to more G&Ts out at La Planeta – the club we ended up every night.

BAD

naughty lola buying drinks at the bar because the free ones weren’t good enough

flying in on Thursday and hitting the ground running with the kick off party. lola should really remember that cava (Spanish champagne) is not my friend. always gives me a terrible hangover. despite that and the jet lag, i managed to make it to all the sessions of day 1 of TBEX. cannot say the same for day 2. the exhaustion of everything FINALLY caught up with me. needless to say, this nearly killed lola and ruined my time.

flying in and rushing from one thing to the next also didn’t allow time to actually tour Girona. it’s a shame because i cannot share any stories about what is supposed to be a lovely city. (Girona’s auditorium is FAB) thank goodness i stayed on an extra couple of days and was able to visit a bit of Costa Brava. otherwise, i could have been anywhere for this conference! lesson learned: build in time on both sides of the conference to actually experience the location you are in. that’s my job & i like doing it. i felt a little short-changed from my time in Spain.

UGLY

one of the gabillion gin & tonics i enjoyed in Spain. it really should have been BIGGER!!

this is what you really came here to read. i have no one is to blame but myself. i didn’t exercise much self-control in department of drinking. free booze = it’s hard to limit yourself. and, given that i’m really not a shy wall flower, the booze just further emboldened me to say more than a hello to a few of those “blogging heroes” i mentioned from the last TBEX. all i can say is LO SIENTO. yep, i introduced myself to the infamous Gary Arndt by referring to his blog all wrong. and when i had my first run-in with Nomadic Matt…let’s just say i feel badly for his ear. Johnny Jet, you are lucky you were on your honeymoon of a lifetime because you would have gotten #lolafied too.

lola loves LiveShareTravel!

thankfully, i don’t think i was offensive to most. two of my favorite things said to me were from Terry Lee of LiveShareTravel. 1) he said lola was like Patsy from Absolutely Fabulous. 100% correct. you get my character completely 2) Terry also said “Sarah and I agree that if you didn’t exist we’d have to invent you.” BEST COMPLIMENT EVER!

oh Will i heart you too!

then there was Will Peach. you know the dude i love to hate or whatever that phrase is. yes, this TBEX he didn’t have 5 things he’d rather be doing. he came, he saw, he kicked ass. BUT when it came to meeting me, well…i think there may still have been at least 5 things he’d rather be doing.

hobo lola

AND a heart-felt thank you to Stephen Otto of Walks of Italy. you’re a friend & a gentleman for scooping me up and sending me off in a cab. too bad i was locked out of my lovely flipkey apartment for over an hour “resting” on the stoop like a hobo. i’d like to say that my roommates slept through me buzzing them but we all know the truth is i was probably buzzing the wrong buzzer. bad lola!

i often say that i don’t need a babysitter but this visit to Spain may suggest otherwise. i’m happily accepting applications should you wish to accompany me in my crazy traveling escapades.

TBEX afterthoughts…who IS a travel blogging hero?

when i wrote my prior TBEX post travel blogging heroes & lola’s TBEX stage fright i didn’t have a plan to write a follow-up post BUT the whole TBEX mystery man got so many of you

talking…

guessing…

wondering…

so who is it?!

AND it actually got me thinking too…

does the ‘TRAVEL BLOG GOD’ title really belong to any one person to join forces with or win the favor of or even dethrone? YES, i DID call Nomadic Matt, Johnny Jet & Everything-Everywhere’s Gary Arndt the TRAVEL BLOG GOD TRIFECTA…

they may well deserve this as Nomadic Matt  has his over 16,000 Facebook fans! Johnny Jet has over 24,000 Twitter followers! Everything-Everywhere has over 18,000 blog readers! those are some impressive stats. and these guys don’t play around – they have been published tons of places too.

BUT, while i think there are many pioneers & examples to learn from, i came to the conclusion that there’s not just one travel blogging hero. there’s a whole JUSTICE LEAGUE of them & room for more all the time. let’s face it, even lola fits into a category all her own.

to me, here’s the real heroic feat. us as travel writers continuing to provide our readers something interesting and new? it’s our challenge to produce quality yet compelling content! i’ve found several new writers out there that deserve the HERO status!

what do you think makes a travel blogging hero?

PS – the answer to the ‘mystery’ person IS buried in here 🙂 and to THE TRIFECTA – it was fun poking around your blogs. YOU do ROCK!!

travel blogging heroes & lola’s TBEX stage fright

could this be the international man of mystery?

i’m an extroverted person. i think anyone who’s met me knows this fact with certainty. if you haven’t met me but are a reader of mine, you probably have garnered this about me as well. so why was i chicken to meet the most notorious blogger around at TBEX in Keystone, Colorado? seriously, lola, you can strike up a conversation with anyone! why did i not try to strike one up with this guy? he IS just a mortal, a mere man.

victims of an extrovert!

yes, he’s a model held up on a pedestal to emulate in the travel blogging community. people really idolize him! in fact, some have even referred to him as the king who has the torch to try and catch. how do i ever think i’m going to be queen of the travel blogosphere if i don’t have his favor? i mean, it was a little mission of mine to win him over with my lola charm. what happened?

behold! who is this travel blogging deity?

i wasn’t afraid to chat it up with the BIG keynote speakers. i had nice conversations with both C.C. Chapman & Christopher Baker. what was it that kept me from just going up and saying hello?! maybe it’s because it’s better for me to just have an image of what he’s like rather than to really know. perhaps i’d be disappointed in the acquaintance after all. or maybe i just like the ‘mystique’ of him.

the wonderful! the powerful! keynote speaker, C.C. Chapman

i came so close several times too. i was in the same room. i was standing back to back with him. he seems approachable enough. granted, he did seem to stick with those whom he already knew. not really branch out away from his inner circle. i guess who can blame him – i kinda did the same thing. and, anyway, why would he need to reach out to others when people flock to him? why would he need to seek out meeting anyone new or possibly up and coming? what would it really get him anyhow?

who oh who is it that makes this shape?

did i miss my chance? probably not. i’m sure there will be other conferences in the future where we’ll both be in attendance. maybe next time i’ll have more guts to speak to this travel blogging icon. or maybe next time he’ll be seeking me out. until then, i guess i’ll just have to continue to watch and read him from afar. that, and try to earn the queen title on my own.

who do you think this travel blogging demigod is?

*HINT* let’s not forget that the infamous Will Peach would rather be doing loads of other things than be at TBEX so keep on guessing!

travel blogging goodness: TBEX 2012 Keystone, Colorado

great expectations

leah + raul + lola = true friends

i’m heading to TBEX in Keystone, Colorado this weekend. Travel Blogging Exchange for those who don’t know what TBEX means. it’s the biggest travel blogging conference in North America and i have been thinking about it for a year now. i’ve been working hard to get my name out in the travel writing space – using my writing and social media. TBEX will be an opportunity for me to measure how i’ve been doing. it will also be a chance to learn a lot about strategies pertaining to what i’m building. best of all, it will be fun to meet & network with other travelers and writers AND see dear friends!

my hopes and expectations:

  1. i hope to discover people do “get” what lola’s all about
  2. i expect to learn A LOT and apply that to my blog
  3. i hope to make some great professional connections that will lead to paid work
  4. i expect to make a few new friends and this alone will make TBEX worthwhile

i can’t wait to answer these four points plus add any others that i wasn’t expecting.

post expectations

what an event! even though there’s always room for improvement, i thought the conference was really well done. i was impressed with the line-up of speakers and the parties were outstanding.  here’s the shake-down of my four points.

totally #lolafied

  • i think those who knew me from the various social networks DO “get” what lola’s all about. i need to continue to grow my audience so more will be in-the-lola-know!

ya know when ya know!

  • i did learn a few new tricks that i need to apply to my blog & writing as well as the importance of a media kit.

great meeting the wonderful C.C. Chapman

  • i did make some great professional connections that i think will lead to paid work and even more importantly, how to continue to make more of these contacts.

the lovely Kirsten Alana – i just can’t get enough

  • i DEFINITELY made some new friends this past weekend. (my favorite souvenir!) it will be fantastic to continue to connect with these people and i look forward to more opportunities to meet my fellow travel writing pals down the road!

group LOVE pic!

what was unexpected?

Keystone is a lovely summer destination! BAD BAD traffic in & out of Denver AND a cluster F*#@ at the Denver airport. who would have thunk? certainly not me!!

here’s to TBEX in Costa Brava!!
