The Great Escape – Verbier, Switzerland Edition

thegreatescape

Welcome to Verbier St-Bernard – One of Europe’s Premier Ski Resorts

Verbier St-Bernard is a winning combination for a winter ‘Great Escape’ being known for its extensive and reliable skiing as well as a town to match with lively nightlife and wonderful restaurants.  Verbier is part of the extensive 4 Vallees network of ski resorts and offers an abundance of activities for both the sport’s enthusiast or spa goer. It is undoubtedly one of the greatest playgrounds in the Alps.

Although Verbier is becoming better known all the time, it still remains as it’s always been, an understated, charming alpine village that’s designed for the passionate. Verbier has over 250 miles of ski runs which makes the “4 Vallees” the largest ski area in Switzerland. Just 1.75 hours from Geneva and 3 hours from Zurich, Verbier can be easily accessed by the amazing and efficient Swiss rail system. Obviously, the wintertime may be the best time to visit Verbier St-Bernard, but there’s something for everyone in all four seasons with its mountain biking, golfing, horseback riding and even cultural events like the Verbier Festival where international classical music greats come together for a 17 day long festival.

eat

La Vache

LA VACHE

La Vache (meaning COW) is new on the Verbier scene and offers a great menu with local favorites, pizzas & a to-die-for burger all at very un-Swiss mountain resort prices. In a partnership with Farinet, Lawrence Dallaglio (famous English rugby player), James Blunt (of musical fame) and Carl Fogarty (world superbike champion), the group has completely renovated a restaurant in the heart of the ski runs.  La Vache is decorated with fur skins, old wood and antiques and may be the best spot to hang out and enjoy an exceptional panoramic view.

Le Caveau

photo 3-4

If you’re looking for good traditional Swiss food at an affordable price, Le Caveau is your spot. The cheese fondue and raclette are their specialties and, I say, when in Switzerland do as the Swiss do! It is a good idea to make a reservation because of its pricing, central location and popularity.

La Cordée Restaurant

CDA-Restaurant

Another newcomer to Verbier, La Cordée des Alpes’ intimate restaurant has a menu of seasonal local and fresh food. La Cordée’s stylish bar offers delicious hand crafted cocktails in a welcoming, chic space for apres-ski or pre-dinner drinks. This is definitely a see and be seen destination. Lola loved the detailed woodwork and gorgeous louvered shutters!

drink

Apres-Ski

1936 Bar

As much as skiing is a part of your winter holiday in Verbier, so is the apres-ski scene. It all starts as you make your way down the mountain. One stop along the way should be Bar 1936, located on the run from ‘les Ruinettes’ to Verbier. Mingle with ski instructors & fellow skiers over a hot wine or cold brew.

le rouge

Next stop at the foot of the ‘le Rouge’ run is Le Rouge Restaurant & Club. With its ski in, ski out links, Le Rouge’s environment is casual cool without any of the stuffiness. Whether you go for lunch, dinner or apres-ski drinks, it is a “must do” destination for visitors and residents of Verbier alike.

Bar Hopping

farinet lounge02

After a day on the slopes and an afternoon of apres-ski, the crowd moves on next to the Farinet Lounge Bar. Farinet has a fantastic selection of cocktails, wines & champagnes. People  typically party here with the DJ’s from 10pm to 1am.

casbah11

For the late night crowd there’s The Casbah, opening up at 11pm. There is something for everyone at the Casbah with its “Rockbah” playing pop-rock music or just getting down on the Club Dance Floor. DJ’s perform there every Saturday night from 1am until 4am.

stay

Le Chalet de Flore

chalet de flore

Le Chalet de Flore is a brand new beautiful, 20 room boutique hotel right in the heart of Verbier village that offers a central, quiet location with a view of the Alpine panorama. Chalet de Flore is a charming luxury 4-star hotel that is only a few minutes walk to the Medran lifts as well as the best restaurants & boutiques. As sister property to Chalet d’Adrien, Chalet de Flore is linked daily by a shuttle bus allowing guests to have full access to the spa and gym at the Chalet d’Adrien. Guests also have priority at the restaurants and benefit from all services at the Relais & Châteaux member establishment. Lola’s favorite thing at Chalet de Flore was the cozy Le Bar.

La Cordée des Alpes

hotel3

Opened just this past December, Hotel Cordée des Alpes is 4-star property and member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World with 34 guest rooms and suites. You’ll feel right at home at this cozy, welcoming boutique property, decorated in sleek Swiss chic and a mix of old-school ski design elements. With an indoor pool, fitness room and lovely spa also on property, you may find it hard to leave  the sanctuary of Cordée des Alpes. To top it all off, their motto is service that reflects a passion for excellence. Tres bon!

Le Chalet d’Adrien

photo 1-12

Le Chalet d’Adrien, known as one of Verbier’s finest hotels, is a 5-star property and a member of the ooo lala Relais & Chateaux family. Chalet d’Adrien’s a charming luxury hotel, offering 20 rooms & 9 suites with an unrestricted view of Verbier and is located at the foot of the ski slopes. If you need to let off a little steam or recuperate from a day of skiing, Chalet d’Adrien has a spa, fitness center and indoor pool on property. The Michelin starred restaurant, Le Table d’Adrien, can also be found here.

Skiing

image

If you are visiting Verbier in the winter, chances are you’ve come to ski. With over 250 miles of ski runs in the “4 Vallees”, one could ski for days and not repeat too much. It’s also a perfect opportunity to take some lessons and work on some new ski skills. Warren Smith Ski Academy, led by Warren himself who is one of Britain’s leading professional freeskiers and an Internationally Certified Performance Coach and Ski Instructor, is the BEST place to go. The Ski Academy works with all levels of skiers offering private or group private lessons as well as 5 day long courses. I can vouch for the patience and persistence of my group private lesson and how my confidence was strengthened in just a few short hours on the slopes. It doesn’t hurt that the instructors are some of the friendliest and most fun out there!

Spa Day

cordee spa

If you need a break from the slopes or some rejuvenation, you’ll find many different options here in Verbier at a variety of spas to choose from. As previously mentioned, both Le Chalet d’Adrien and Hotel Cordée des Alpes have lovely spas on the premises and offer an array of treatments to pamper yourself. Another option is Chilali, a professional mobile massage service that offers treatments in the comfort of your hotel or private chalet. Quite handy if you don’t feel like going anywhere!

Shopping

photo_exterieure_xtreme_small

Even though Verbier is mostly understated glamour there is definitely good shopping to be had here. Obviously, the number one thing found here is a plethora of ski gear and equipment stores! While the branded stores like The North Face & Patagonia are represented here, for the best variety head over to Xtreme Sports Ski Boutique where you’ll find a large selection of skiing/snowboarding equipment and the best bargains. If you are looking for something of a local nature you can find Swiss items and handicrafts typical of the Valais region at Bagn’Art.

A note of thanks to Verbier St-Bernard for arranging the #GirlsSwissAdventure visits to the La Cordee, La Vache & Le Caveau restaurants, ski equipment rentals from Philippe Roux, ski passes and lessons with Warren Smith Ski Academy. AND, finally, the lovely sleep at Le Chalet de Flore.

And to Switzerland Tourism for the first class SWISS train pass. It’s the *BEST* way to travel in Switzerland!

My visit to Verbier was beyond my expectations of FABULOUS and if I didn’t ‘Lola Approve’ it I’d say otherwise. The views here are mine, merci beaucoup!

4 Reasons I Love Four Seasons Milano

Milanese Magnificence at Four Seasons Milano

FPO_MIL_324

In the past year, I’ve been quite lucky to have stayed in my fair share of Four Seasons properties and I’ve come to expect certain things. Let’s just say something like excellence on many levels. A prime location. An amazing dining offering. An impeccable staff. And, if I’m really lucky, a unique, personal and memorable experience. Truly inspiring – Four Seasons Milano didn’t let me down with any of these.

FPO_MIL_122

UNO – Property & Location

Four Seasons Milano, located in the heart of the Golden Quad area,  may have the best hotel address ever – certainly in Milan. The “quadrilatero della moda” or “the fashion” district is the square shape made by the intersection of Via Montenapoleone, Via della Spiga, Via Sant’ Andrea and Via Manzoni – Italy’s most POSH, SLEEK & FASHIONABLE streets. Four Seasons Milano, a 118 room hotel housed in a 15th century convent that has been restored with historical references to its past , is nestled in this quad off the quiet Via Gesu. Milan, known as a private city due to much of its beauty being hidden behind closed gates that keep gardens, courtyards and terraces out of sight from the street, can be discovered here in the relaxed elegance of Four Season Milano. Like the view of the gorgeous inner courtyard, some rooms are decorated in shades of green with only the finest of timeless Italian linens from Frette.

DUE – Unique One-of-a-Kind Experience

When I let Four Seasons Milano know that I was coming for an overnight and hoped to experience one of the things that Milan is most known for, SHOPPING, they did not let me down. They didn’t highlight a map and send me on my way. Nope. They asked a local in-the-know personal stylist to take me on a private tour. Melanie Payge took me to behind-the-scenes sample sales and showrooms and explained the heritage of the fashion design industry in Milan. It was interesting and a great lesson to learn about how fashion doesn’t fall far from the family tree! I loved discovering some of the up and coming Italian fashion superstars. Plus, it was bonus eye candy for this shopaholic and so much fun! I even scored a Fall 2013 item just off the runway. CHA-CHING! oh & Melanie’s tagline is “she knows Milan like the back of her handbag” which couldn’t be any more true or perfetto!

FPO_MIL_309

TRE – Incredible Culinary Experience

Every Four Seasons I’ve stepped foot into has a unique flair for food in its own way. Four Seasons Milano absolutely blew me away with a special VIP invitation to a white truffle &  Barolo wine dinner at Il Teatro. For starters, the restaurant is consistently ranked in the top five in Milan – OOO LALA! Plus, the truffle business is not to be trifled with as it’s edible gold with a very limited season. Not only was this multi-course, multi-wine pairing meal amazing but the table company was wonderful. I had the continued pleasure of Ms. Payge’s bubbly personality, who stayed on after our shopping afternoon, as well as the company of the Four Seasons Milano Sales Manger, Dina, and two handsome wine & truffle reps. I felt like a true VIP to be in such lovely, interesting and fun company.

FPO_MIL_132

QUATTRO – Phenomenal Staff

As soon as you step inside this urban sanctuary you will feel personal service that is exemplary. Greeted by multiple staff who know who you are and are there to ensure you have all that you need is just one of the things I found exceptional about Four Seasons Milano. It is said, the concierge team’s reputation extends city-wide to be the best for arranging almost anything under the Milanese moon. I was particularly impressed with how I was welcomed in as practically one of their own, especially during the special VIP dinner.

A note of gratitude to Four Seasons Milano for hosting my stay in Milan. I haven’t met alola_blackpink Four Seasons property that I didn’t adore but if I didn’t ‘Lola Approve’ it I’d say otherwise. The views here are mine, grazie!

60 Shades of Awesome at 60 Thompson

60 Shades…

That’s right. I went there. Why? Because 60 Thompson is a sexy hotel. The kind of hotel that conjures up foreplay to all kinds of fun. How, you wonder?

60 Thompson exterior3

Well, I can tell you the usual tidbits about 60 Thompson. Like it’s a small luxury hotel with only 100 rooms in the heart of uber swank Soho. Things like complimentary wifi, bath products by Kiehls, in-room pantries with Dean & Deluca treats and i-Pod docking stations are standard. I know, just that alone is enough to make anyone’s heart race a little.

The minimalist yet retro feel of 60 Thompson’s design helps with the seductive nature of the property. Designer Thomas O’Brien certainly knew what he was doing. Welcoming you but not overwhelming you so you can truly appreciate what is playful about 60 Thompson.

60 Thompson lobby

The lobby’s over-sized couches invite you to come take a seat for a while and watch the flurry of activity. It definitely feels like a place to see and be seen. The warm tones of the guest rooms make you wish to relax and perhaps even slow down. Not always an easy thing to create in the rush of Manhattan.

60 Thompson Bar1  60 Thompson Bar 2

Then there’s the chic Thom Bar with it’s spirited touches that will make you want to cozy up with your company or easily branch out and make some new friends. It is definitely a spot for some intimate fun. As a guest you can also enjoy the members-only rooftop lounge, A60, in the warmer months.

60 Thompson terasse

60 Thompson’s restaurant, Kittichai, must not be left out of the formula of what’s provocative about the property. A favorite among local New Yorkers and international foodies, the whimsical decor alone makes it worth the trip.

60 Thompson Kittichai1

So there you have it. It’s a gorgeous property that lures you in with its sexy sophistication. But you want to know what I find the most attractive about 60 Thompson? The warm reception of the staff and their distinct service. Now that’s something that would get any guest hot & bothered. Go check them out next time you’re in New York and you’ll be hooked too.

luxe for less – swanky stays that are budget!

yes, you read that right – luxe for less!

we all know i have “poshaholic” tastes but it isn’t always possible to stay swanky with the 4 & 5 star price tags! well, since i’ve discovered HostelBookers, the budget travel specialists, my desire to take off on whim has become more of a reality! now i can direct my itchy feet to great, yet cheap, luxury hotels in my favorite destinations like London, NYC, Bangkok and Berlin. come take a gander at what i mean.

Comfort Inn Brooklyn Cruise Terminal - New York

Comfort Inn Brooklyn Cruise Terminal

as much as i like to shop, eat and play in Manhattan, i find those exorbitant room prices disturb my beauty sleep, so i was delighted to discover this sparkling new hotel with incredibly reasonable rates only eight minutes away from the shiniest part of the Big Apple! the rooms are simple, but sweet, with the little flourishes like crystal bedside lamps, sleek computer desks with free Wi-Fi, flat-screen satellite TVs and personal coffee/tea stations. after my complimentary breakfast, i can set out for Manhattan by either taking quick taxi ride through the Battery Tunnel, hopping on the local subway at Carroll Street or climbing aboard the ferry at the Cruise Terminal. i love to come back to Brooklyn around sunset to ride the bus down Van Brunt Street to admire the view from the romantic Pier 44 Waterfront Garden before i return to my room to dress for my evening escapades.

Best Western Palm- London

Best Western Palm Hotel

when i want to go incognito a few days, i fly into London’s Luton Airport and grab the train to this darling neighborhood hotel from HostelBookers that’s become my haven when i need to replenish my party-weary soul. the spacious, ultra-modern rooms have stylistic touches like sexy glass showers, dreamy inset lighting and crisp cappuccino-colored curtains. i like the top story rooms best because of the interesting skylights in the bathroom and over the computer station. with their 24-hour reception desk and round-the-clock room service, i relish slipping in during the wee hours so i can add that dash of intrigue to my real world escape. when, and if, i want to leave my cozy little sanctuary, i can walk over to the Golders Green Underground Station, checking out the current status of the historical Hippodrome, before heading out to explore Central London in my best incognito disguise.

Hoppegarten - Berlin

Hotel Hoppegarten Berlin

every so often i hear the call of the wild, but don’t want to stray too far from the cosmopolitan action, so i head for this classy little fringe hotel that gives me the best of both worlds.  although the hotel is surrounded by luscious nature reserves, Berlin’s city center, Alexanderplatz, is only a 15-minute drive away. the stylish lobby, bar and restaurant are embellished with multicultural touches that accommodate an eclectic range of tourists, making it one of my favorite Berlin hangouts. i do love to take solitary walks and stretch my legs in the Erpetal Nature Reserve to see the little streams flanked by wildflowers. i also love to dress up and head over to the nearby Galopprennbahn Hoppegarten race track to indulge in some highbrow leisure-time and sporting events.

Best Western Mayfair Suites- Bangkok

Best Western Mayfair Suites

the international flavor of this Bangkok hotel exemplifies the perfect blend of proper pampering and cultural immersion and the sleek décor of the ultra-modern lobby emphasizes that exotic minimalist beauty that draws me to the Orient. i begin with a workout in their beautifully equipped gym, followed by a long, soaking bath in my private tub before pillaging my mini-fridge for leftovers and my fully stocked mini-bar for treats. since i can walk to Bangkok’s Pratunam shopping district, i’ve prowled it at all hours and discovered that some of the juiciest deals are available at the Night Market on Ratchawithi Road.

a different kind of castle – Four Seasons Prague

a palatial complex of its very own unique kind!

it’s no secret that i like the royal treatment. i have princess tastes that’s for sure. thankfully Prague has a gorgeous castle so it was a perfect place to begin my month-long Eurotour in regal style. having said that, the Prague Castle wasn’t my favorite grand property – Four Seasons Prague was!

i had the pleasure of touring the gorgeous Four Seasons while visiting Prague. located in the historical Old Town, Four Seasons is situated along side the Vltava River with the famous Charles Bridge nearby. what i loved best about this property, besides its STUNNING views, was the unique marriage of four different style buildings, each from different eras, brought together to create one luxurious hotel.

how did they accomplish this you may be wondering? well, along with careful restoration & preservation of the different original details of the buildings, the property was tied altogether by a modern building.  the styles of the older buildings are neo-Renaissance, neo-Classical and Baroque and, of course, the newest structure has a modern feel so as to allow each of the other buildings to retain its individual personality. BRILLIANT!

“The important focus throughout was the integrity of the design that ultimately blended the architectural styles harmoniously to reflect the character and elegance of Prague’s Old Town.” says Rene Beauchamp, General Manager of Four Seasons Hotel Prague.

i’d say mission accomplished. during the tour, it was pointed out that this promise to have each structure reflect its own persona offers visitors the option of choosing between a Renaissance, Baroque, Neo-Classical or contemporary stay. i love this unique approach & its one that ensures this property will offer a special & memorable experience for its guests. perhaps one would be lucky enough to try each style on separate luxury holidays.

now a bit about these different styled buildings

The Neo-Renaissance House

built in 1883, the neo-Renaissance building has a richly embellished facade that was restored, including the grand entry foyer with its frescoed ceilings.

The Neo-Classical House

dating back to 1827, the neo-Classical building has many original features such as windows & fixtures.

The Baroque House

the oldest house of the complex was built in 1737 in the Baroque style. many architectural features were preserved & restored, including stone architraves and masonry vaults, wooden doors and hand-forged ironwork.

The Modern House

of course built in the 21st century, this structure’s interiors reflect the modern-day traveler with a more sleek look.

is this property lola approved? ABSOLUTELY!! Four Seasons Prague definitely accomplishes giving its guests the best of modern-day conveniences & comforts while retaining the city’s rich history all in one place. i liked the balance of old & new. even the interior decorating achieves this concept. as i’ve said before, i love the idea of keeping the old alive but breathing new life into it. my favorite style of the four houses was the Renaissance. here’s hoping this princess returns again soon to Prague & as a guest of the Four Seasons there!
